Hunting Island Day #4

Olivia slept ok but had a few wake ups.  She woke up about 6:30 a.m. again and she snuggled with us for a bit.  We got up and had breakfast- blueberry pancakes.  We decided to go explore Port Royal that morning.  Olivia took a brief nap on the way there.

They had a really neat boardwalk and observation tower.  We walked that and saw Parris Island.  You could even hear some gun shots from the island...well we think.  After Port Royal we went to the Johnson Creek Tavern for lunch.  It was a long lunch...just slow but the a/c felt really good.

We decided to go to the beach one more time.  Olivia did some more searching for seashells and pointed at the birds.  It was a bit windy that afternoon but we still had fun.

After the beach we showered.  When I came back from the shower there was no one at the campsite.  Then I found Brendon and Olivia and 3 deer came up to the campsite next to us.  Olivia was checking out the deer and fed them some carrots and grapes.  I was so happy we finally saw deer! Usually they are all over the place but not this time.

We ate dinner and as we were finishing, Elvis drove by on a golf cart.  He was having a concert at 7:00 p.m.  So we went to an Elvis concert for a bit and then down to the beach for some pictures.  It was a nice way to spend our last night at Hunting Island.

Hunting Island Day #3

Olivia woke up about 6:30 a.m. but we tried to keep her in bed with us for a bit.  It was a soggy morning since it rained the night before.  We had breakfast- French toast and sausage.  Then we got ready to go to Beaufort, SC. 

We went to the Historic District by the waterfront.  I was so excited to go there because I wanted to take Olivia to 2 places- #1 the bookstore there and #2 the ice cream shop! Well as soon as we crossed the bridge and turned onto Bay Street, I looked at the book store and was saddened because it wasn't there anymore! I wanted to take Olivia to the children's book area and read her some books.  This store was full of unique books, some signed by authors, and lots of Southern authors and books.  I was so sad it was gone.  We went to a few shops and bought a few things.  We went into a children's store- Doodlebugs- and let Olivia out of the stroller and let her play.  They had lots of toys and things for her to play with and I bought her a book- "That's not my plane." Since she loves airplanes.  We had lunch a Plums and she actually did really good.  She ate grilled cheese and some sweet potato fries.  Then we went down by the waterfront.  We even got to see the swing bridge open! Then we stopped for ice cream since it was soooo hot!

Olivia napped on the way home to the campground and then we stopped at the lighthouse.  Then we went to the beach.  It was a little overcast but that was pretty nice! I taught Olivia how to look for seashells and she loved it.  She picked out some shells for us to take home.  Olivia also loved the birds at the beach! We got her in the water a little bit but still a little scared.

We then showered and ate dinner.  We did the usual of bath in a bucket, milk, and it took about an hour to get her to bed.  She woke up twice...but went right back to sleep.

The funny story of the day was...about the raccoons.  The raccoons are quite brave.  You need to make sure the coolers are secured and the garbage has no food in it.  Well Brendon left the back of my truck open since we go in an out of it quite a bit.  At one point he thought he saw a dog running down the road.  Then we heard a click- like when our coolers open and close.  Well he went to go in the truck and then noticed there was marshmallow everywhere in the front.  A sneaky raccoon got in the truck  and ate our marshmallows! It was so gross and sticky to clean up! Lesson learned...slose the truck at night!

Hunting Island Day #2

It was a restless night of sleep.  Olivia woke a few times during the night.  I think she was a little scared and didn't know where she was.  She slept until about 7:00 a.m.  We got up and had breakfast- yummm...camping bacon and eggs.  After breakfast we decided to hit the beach!

We got all ready to go and put Olivia in the wagon with all of our beach gear.  We found a spot and set up our shade tent.  Brendon played with  Olivia in the sand for a bit and we tried to get her into the water.  Today it scared her.  I think because it messed with her balance- the water coming in and then out.  So she didn't like it too much.  I filled up her little pool we brought and she played in that.  I even sat in it with her. She also ate a snack by the beach.

We then went back to the campsite for lunch.  We had hot dogs.  Olivia was an eating machine.  She seemed overly hungry so we just kept feeding her! After lunch our plan was to have her nap.  The temperature in the tent was 96 degrees.  Way too hot for Olivia to sleep- even with 2 fans that we had.  The flies were really bothering us while we ate so I decided that we needed to go for a car ride to get something for the flies.  That did the trick and she slept in the nice cool a/c in the car.  We rode around aimlessly for a bit just so she would nap.  We drove down to the pier and decided to check out the nice and cool (a/c !!!) nature center.  They have lots of different animals to see- fish, snakes, turtles, and a lizard.  So she liked looking at the fish and then I showed her the owl (it was a stuffed owl) and she just loved that!

Then we came back and showered and ate dinner.  After we ate dinner, Brendon wanted to fish at the pier so we went back down there.  It was a little scary to let Olivia walk on it because the railings are really wide and she could slip and fall right in the water.  So I tried to hold her while Brendon tried to catch some crabs.  It was a horrible 30 minutes of trying to hold a wild monkey! Brendon didn't get any crabs though but there was a fish in his net!

Then we came back to the campsite and gave Olivia a bath in the bucket.  She had some milk and then it only took an hour to get her to go to sleep.  But she slept much better! She even slept through the thunderstorm we endured!

Hunting Island Day #1

On Monday we left for our usual vacation spot of Hunting Island, South Carolina.  We weren't sure how it would go with Olivia, but we thought that we would at least try.  If we had to come early we knew we could.

We got the car all packed up and left about 9:50 a.m. It was literally packed to the ceiling.  Packing to go to the beach with a little one means lots of extra stuff!! The list is a mile long! I sat in the back with Olivia and had an array of things to help entertain her-books, animals, crayons and paper, and Kristy let us borrow her portable dvd player and we had Sesame Street episodes.  We had one little detour at the beginning of our trip but the rest of the ride was pretty smooth.  We stopped outside of Augusta at a Rest Stop and had lunch.  Then we were off! We made pretty good time and got to Hunting Island about 4:00.

We set up the tent and the rest of the camp site.  Then we had dinner.  After dinner we decided to take a walk down to the beach.  We weren't sure how Olivia would react since this was the first time she saw the ocean.  She loved it.  We took off her sandals and let her walk on the beach. It was low tide so there were a few tidal pools so she went and stuck her feet in some of them and splashed.

After the beach we gave her a bath in a bucket....literally.  I thought it would be better since she is afraid of the shower.  She loved the bucket.  Then we had some milk- thank goodness the camp store sold milk.

The worst part of the day was trying to get her to go to sleep.I knew it would be difficult but it took almost 2 hours.  I laid with her on the air mattress for awhile...a long while.  Then finally got her in the pack and play with her animals.  Then rubbed her belly and then she finally fell asleep.  Needless to say I was tired at that point too and went to bed!

Happy Birthday Ryan!

Today we celebrated Ryan's birthday! He had a pool party.  That sounded so good today since it was hot again.  It sounded really good to me and I couldn't wait to swim.  When I went to go pack my bathing suit, I noticed it was damp.  I thought that was odd.  It was laying on the bed of the spare bedroom and so I checked the rest of the bed and it was damp too.  Then I discovered that Jake peed on the bed and the floor! Ahhhh.... of course this was 40 minutes before we had to leave and he peed on 3 bathing suits! I quick shoved the comforter in the wash and decided that there was no way to wash and dry a bathing suit in that amount of time.  Brendon ended up taking Olivia in the pool and she did good with her friends.  She even went in her boat which all of a sudden she has started to hate.  Kim made a delicious Blue Velvet birthday cake for Ryan.  It was so yummy! I helped her write Happy Birthday Ryan on the cake....I told her before hand that this is not my forte and I did some practice before I put it on the cake and of course my nerves got the best of me (even my arm was shaking) and it turned out not so great.  Thankfully she didn't care! I guess you know never to call me to decorate a cake....bake one and frost it yes...decorate...no way!  It was a fun time though with our friends! We hope that Ryan had a very Happy 1st Birthday!
