Record Breaking Weather

Today it was a whopping 76 degrees!! Wahoo....we loved it! This morning I went with some friends to pick up my race packet at the Hot Chocolate race expo.  Fun times and always lots of laughs.

Then came home and ate lunch and then off to go fishing! We went to Tribble Mill but caught no fish.  But Olivia did much better with the fishing pole.  She wanted to hold it and turn the handle.  She also was interested in the bobber.  She was sad that we didn't catch any fish.  The the Barbie fishing pole malfunctioned...Brendon is hoping to repair it.  We went to the playground after fishing and played on the playground.  We went on the swings and Olivia went down some of the slides.  There was a ton of kids playing at the park.  I think everyone enjoyed the warm weather today.

Olivia did better at dinner tonight.  She at squash (it was really zucchini but we were calling it squishy squash).  We had some venison for dinner and she ate it up! She kept saying, "More Deer!!!!"

Brendon also taught Olivia her full name including her last name.  When prompted she will say it.  He is also working on our street name...she has 2 parts of the 3 parts of it.  Such a smarty pants!

Warm Spell

I am no weatherman but it was nice this morning to leave for work with short sleeves on and no jacket.  I guess maybe I wasn't listening to the whole weather forcast last night because my whole plan was to play outside today after Olivia's nap.  I even had Brendon get her slide out.  Well...it rained! What a disappointment for both of us.  But the rest of the weekend is supposed to be pretty nice.

Olivia got a boo boo on her foot today.  She was helping Brendon put away some cans in the pantry and one fell on her foot.  Ouch! It is a little bruised but not swollen.  But now when she gets a boo boo she will come over to us and tell us she has a boo boo and to kiss it. But that tells us she recognizes pain and where!

Sorry for the lack of pictures...I have been slacking.  I will get some this weekend!

Funnies for the Day

Short but funny post:

Yes...I wore the shirt she picked out for me today.

Olivia was very happy to see Susan today.

Olivia was so tired from all of the fun she just flat out laid on the ground for awhile.  She finally decided she wanted to take a nap and went upstairs, threw Lamby in the bed, and got her sleepy sack ready.

Mickey Mouse is the newest stuffed animal to be dragged around like Linus' blanket.

She told Lamby today she was stinky and needed a bath.

We played outside this afternoon and all of a sudden she is afraid of weeds in the grass. BUT she loved seeing all of the birds outside and carried a rock around until she lost it.

Finally...I made a blanket tent tonight and we played in the tent.  She loved it! She was sad when I took it down.

Alone in the Dark

I have been sitting alone in the dark with Olivia the past few weeks.  I admit...I failed at the Cry It Out.  It work for a few nights but then it stopped.  So now I sit in her room in the dark and wait for her to fall asleep.  Some nights I am lucky...15 minutes or less...some nights...45 minutes.  I keep telling myself that I am going to set a time and then be out of her room by that time but I just forget.  Tonight she sang to herself for a good 10 minutes...ABCs, Row your Boat....all her favorites.  Finally she fell asleep.  But as of right now that is the strategy to get her to sleep.

Olivia and I went to Gymboree today.  She was so happy to see her friends Griffin and Kenny.  Olivia and Griffin had a great time jumping.  I am sure Lauren's arms are a little sore like mine since they asked to do it over and over! Olivia even said Griffin was a funny boy! I am loving to see how their play is changing...the kids are starting to approach each other and recognize each other as a person with a name!

Dinner has gone better the past 2 nights.  She has sat in her big girl chair.  Tonight she complained of wanting to get out but I stood firm and wouldn't let her out, while at the same time shoving peas in her mouth! So at least I stood my ground on one thing today!

oops...had to make an edit.  Olivia helped me pick out my clothes tonight for tomorrow.  I asked her to find me a shirt to wear.  She pointed to a shirt, said, "This one! Pink Shirt! Look pretty mommy!"

Love her!

Reading

Reading is such a powerful tool.  As a teacher I know that, but as a parent I have learned how and why it is so important to read to and with your child.  For the longest time Olivia hated books which broke my little teacher heart.  As a teacher I want her to LOVE reading. But sooner or later Olivia started loving books.

My friend Cathy and I had a discussion about this a few weeks ago.  When do you know your child is reading?  In the milestones for babies one of the first things doctors or developmental specialists want to see is if a baby turns pages.  That is the first step in reading.  From there the possibilities are endless from the parent perspective.  What you do as a parent while holding that book with your child is endless.  Pointing out letters, words, pictures, when they are ready- pointing out punctuation, having them follow along with a finger etc., etc, etc, it is endless!

Here is what Olivia started doing.  Usually Olivia will bring us books and say, "Mommy read!" or "Daddy read!" There are some books that are more popular which get read multiple times a day.  Last Thursday I picked up the seasonal Karen Katz book title, "Where is Baby's Valentine?"  It is a question-answer style of book (very similar to all the others we have of hers).  But Olivia first picked up the word valentine.  Now we have read it multiple times since buying it, but now I have started leaving out words which she fills in.  She is not "reading" the letters but she is recalling them from her memory and making a connection to the picture which is a reading skill.  Once children understand that groups of letters put together make words and the words relate to the picture...wowie...reading takes off.

Now tonight I told her to read to me.  From her memory of hearing the book (several times) and looking at the pictures she basically read the story.  Not word for word, but words that she remembers from the page connected with the picture.  I LOVED it! I loved the part when she even remembered to say "Yum, Yum!" about the box of chocolates.

But it showed me how powerful reading is and how we need to continue to foster that love of reading with her.  Brendon loves to read and I love to read also so hopefully Olivia will love reading too!

3 Kings Party...one year later

Tonight we celebrated with our friends the 3 Kings Day or otherwise known as the Epiphany.  Brendon, Olivia and I went to church this morning.  Olivia did pretty good...some talking here and there.  The family behind us told us they think Olivia is so funny and that she says funny things.  They also said it made the husband want to have another baby and a girl because of how cute Olivia is.  They are not the first to tell us that but it makes us feel that Olivia is a special girl.

After church we relaxed and had breakfast.  Then all the usual reading of the Sunday paper, football, and some napping.  Then we got ready to go to Liliana's house.

We had so much fun with our friends.  This morning at church our priest talked about the gifts that were brought to Jesus and how some people exchange gifts.  He also said that the gift we should give to people is just us...the best gift is me! I think tonight was my realization of that.  We don't need to give gifts as in material things, but tonight's gift was of friendship, laughter, and love.  Our little ones are growing up so quick and it was so different from our gathering last year.  Last year all of this kids were not mobile yet and now we all are! Olivia loves her friends so much and she talks about them all the time.  We are so blessed and grateful for their friendships!
